Joe Ramon Sr. was asked to provide demolition services to clear the way for San Antonio’s 1968 HemisFair (located where the iconic Tower of the Americas still stands). It paved the way for the construction and road-building company, established in 1945, to break into demolition. Generations later, his family business continues to be a leader in providing professional demolition services to Central and South Texas.
“Demolition isn’t an easy business,” says Timothy Ramon, president of JR RAMON Demolition and grandson of the company’s namesake. “But we’ve got employees who have been with us for decades, and their dedication and expertise help keep us on top.” Retaining employees for years is unique in this business that relies so heavily on contract work, and so is the fact that the company owns and operates its own equipment.
The company also remains successful due to its laser focus. Soon after the HemisFair project, Ramon Sr. and his sons decided to center the business model solely on demolition. They also decided to serve Central and South Texas areas exclusively. These decisions made them the company of choice for regional commercial and residential projects and disaster recovery efforts. They helped orchestrate the delicate work of turning the beloved San Antonio Municipal Auditorium into the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and cleaned up storm debris on more than 1,000 miles of Texas roadway after Hurricane Rita, to name a few.
Even with a crystal-clear business path, however, the company’s financial and accounting side is challenging. Two years ago, Timothy was preparing to take the reigns of the company from his now-retired father, Joe Ramon Jr. (who led the company for 40 years), and was referred to Steven to help with the complex succession planning. The collaboration proved that, even after decades in business, the family is still learning new tricks. “Steven recommended we reconfigure our corporate structure to serve our purpose better,” Timothy explains. “His team has been extremely responsive and knowledgeable throughout the entire transition, which has had its challenges.”
Just as JR RAMON Demolition continues to restructure Central and South Texas skylines and landscapes, the Bankler team’s work in restructuring the Ramon family’s business will help it withstand the test of time.
